We were in the NIL boat which pulled the daughter off the boat which was wedged in the rocks at the lighthouse.
The lighthouse keeper called in the mayday.
Conditions were very rough as usual for the lighthouse.
The other NIL guided boat tried cpr -no avail.
Numerous other obmg boats in the area unfortunately oblivious to what just happened.
Nil guide did quit, and returned later in season as also we did.
Witnesed later in the day obmg fishmaster marabel boat towing the capsized whaler upside down back to dock-*another sombering site that day for us-
Our NIL guides performed heroically in the face on danger.
Daughter returned later in season to scatter her dad's ashes at Langara.
Thanks

A quick note about technological fixes...

It seems to me that a fascination with technology as a solution to environmental problems is essentially insane. I subscribe to the 'people killing people' not necessarily the gun, and our current climate change troubles are a result of lifestyle, a particular American lifestyle that values huge amounts of personal space and spatial freedom that is grounded in a love affair with the internal combustion engine. The car as a technology is not responsible for the problems, its the individual need to own one, to drive it to the corner store, to have a double car garage and single-family detached house with a yard somewhere in the suburbs.

Any sort of technological fix that simpy tries to adapt to our present lifestyle is doomed. What we need is to fundamentally rethink how we live, not simply the technology that undergirds it.

Democrats too now can learn from the Canadian elections .. no party won cause they really did not care about the voters, but only about winning themselves http://anyonecare.wordpress.com/2008/10/15/canada-harper-failed-again-in-an-attempt-to-win-majority-government/

I have to say that the more I see of this guy, the more I like him. He comes across as a genuine human being, who, while not necessarily smarter than me, impresses me.

Low key, not overly confident, and to be quite truthful, he seems to be honest; and this is the one and only thing that I'm looking for in a politician right now and for ever more.

Noble sentiment. I agree there are better things to drop a trillion dollars on, but the scope of the problem is hard to fathom. What does it mean that banks are unwilling to lend money, to each other and to business? In the short term, not very much. If things settle down and business as usual gets going, wide ranging consequences might be mitigated. But dragging it out over months and longer would be moving us into uncharted territory.

On the brighter side of things, maybe shaking up the status quo with economic turmoil would encourage more people to plant gardens, have tea parties, and get to know their neighbours, forgoing international flights and ipods for a pound of grain and a block of butter.
